Letter, A. Shaw to Mary Shaw; 3/23/1863

Letter, Albert Shaw to his mother, Mary Shaw. He is feeling much better, but his wife, Almerinda (\u27\u27Rinnie\u27\u27), is still in bad health. Their son, Clarence, likes to go out to the fields before dinner and ride home on a plow mule. He writes that the slaves are in good health, though Belle has been laid up for a day or two. Jane has spun nearly 40 yards. He tells her about the crops and livestock, and he expects the officer in Brookhaven to impress his corn for the army\u27s use. He has heard no war news since the battle at Port Hudson, Louisiana (Admiral Farragut\u27s attempt to run seven Union ships past the fort on March 14, 1863). 1863.https://scholarsjunction.msstate.edu/mss-shaw-family-papers-mckell/1005/thumbnail.jp

Letter from Albert Shaw to his mother, Mary Shaw, telling her about the ill health of himself, his son, some of the slaves, and the neighborhood in general. Some of the soldiers in Brookhaven have the measles. He tells her that he has been discharged again. He is proud of the fact that so many men have enlisted in the army voluntarily. Fort Donelson and Clarksville have been recaptured \u27\u27with a considerable number of Prisoners and destroying a very large amount of Yankee property.\u27\u27 1862.https://scholarsjunction.msstate.edu/mss-shaw-family-papers-mckell/1000/thumbnail.jp

Letter, Albert Shaw to his mother, Mary Shaw, telling her that his wife, Almerinda (\u27\u27Rinnie\u27\u27), is very ill with \u27\u27billious cholic.\u27\u27 Their son, Clarence, has recovered from his toothache. He mentions making shoes for the negroes. There was a battle at Coffeeville, Mississippi, but he doesn\u27t know the result (the battle, which took place on December 5, was a Confederate victory). Major Clark is camped at Brookhaven with two companies of cavalry. Shaw sent a wagon to the salt mine, but he has had no word of it since. 1862.https://scholarsjunction.msstate.edu/mss-shaw-family-papers-mckell/1004/thumbnail.jp

Letter, Albert Shaw to his mother, Mary Shaw, telling her that a new regiment (the 36th Mississippi Infantry) was raised in Meridian, Mississippi, and elected Drury Brown as a colonel. He also writes that Copiah County has nearly two thousand men in the army. 1862.https://scholarsjunction.msstate.edu/mss-shaw-family-papers-mckell/1002/thumbnail.jp

Central Stars of Planetary Nebulae in Galactic Open Clusters: Providing additional data for the White Dwarf Initial-to-Final-Mass Relation

Accurate (<10%) distances of Galactic star clusters allow precise estimation of the physical parameters of any physically associated Planetary Nebula (PN) and also that of its central star (CSPN) and its progenitor. The progenitor's mass can be related to the PN's chemical characteristics and furthermore, provides additional data for the widely used white dwarf (WD) initial-to-final mass relation (IFMR) that is crucial for tracing the development of both carbon and nitrogen in entire galaxies. To date there is only one PN (PHR1315- 6555) confirmed to be physically associated with a Galactic open cluster (ESO 96 -SC04) that has a turn-off mass ∼\sim2 M⊙_{\odot}. Our deep HST photometry was used for the search of the CSPN of this currently unique PN. In this work, we present our results.Comment: 2 pages, 1 figure, IAU343 Synposiu

An Algorithm for Single-item Capacitated Economic Lot Sizing with Piecewise Linear Production Costs and General Holding Costs

We consider the Capacitated Economic Lot Size problem with piecewise linear production costs and general holding costs, which is an NP-hard problem but solvable in pseudo-polynomial time. A straightforward dynamic programming approach to this problem results in an [TeX: O(n2barcbard)O(n^2 \\bar{c} \\bar{d} )] algorithm, where [TeX: nn] is the number of periods, and [TeX: bard\\bar d and barc\\bar c] are the average demand and the average production capacity over the nn periods, respectively. However, we present a dynamic programming procedure with complexity [TeX: O(n2barqbard)O(n^2 \\bar{q} \\bar{d} )], where [TeX: barq\\bar q] is the average number of pieces of the production cost functions. In particular, this means that problems in which the production functions consist of a fixed set-up cost plus a linear variable cost are solved in [TeX: O(n2bard)O(n^2 \\bar{d})] time. Hence, the running time of our algorithm is only linearly dependent on the magnitude of the data. This result also holds if extensions such as backlogging and start-up costs are considered. Moreover, computational experiments indicate that the algorithm is capable of solving quite large problem instances within a reasonable amount of time. For example, the average time needed to solve test instances with 96 periods, 8 pieces in every production function and average demand of 100 units, is approximately 40 seconds on a SUN SPARC 5 workstation
